Defense pays off with a point for Rangers
Buffalo SabresGoaltender Ryan Miller stopped shootout attempts from Nikolai Zherdev, Markus Naslund and Chris Drury and Ales Kotalik scored the only goal on Steve Valiquette as the Sabres edged the Rangers, 2-1, Friday night.

Miller had been terrific, stopping 43 shots in regulation and overtime. Valiquette stopped 32 in a game that featured textbook defense. It wasn't a bad strategy for the Rangers, who had won only two of seven coming in and were in need of points at the start of this five-game road trip.

Miller paying dividends for Sabres during streak
Buffalo SabresRyan Miller wasn't hiding from the facts. He made it clear Friday after the morning workout that he had been average at times this season, maybe a cut above. The cold, hard truth was that the Sabres' success this season largely depended on him, and he needed to play better if they were going anywhere.

And there was no hiding from the facts Friday night after he made a season-high 43 saves through three periods and overtime against the Rangers. It always begins and ends with the goaltender, and Miller would determine whether the Sabres would extend their winning streak to four games before heading off to Detroit for his homecoming.

 The Daily Zone Report: 1/7/09
Buffalo SabresThe Sabres won their third straight game last night against Ottawa. It appeared to be an easy game with Matt Ellis scoring his third goal in two games before most fans could even sit down to watch, but Jason Spezza made sure the game would be close with two goals in a minute to make it 3-2 going into the third period. The Sabres hung on for a 4-2 win after Thomas Vanek scored an empty netter to rack his season total up to 27. The game itself was a huge win seeing that Carolina and Pittsburgh also won their games. With every game being so important, the Sabres have a very tough back to back slate this weekend when the face the Rangers and Red Wings. Will the streak continue? - Devin

Buffalo SabresTonight is game night for the Sabres as they face-off against the once mighty Senators. While the Sens have struggled this season, they still put up a huge fight against Buffalo and have owned them recently in HSBC Arena. This should be an excellent barometer to see if the Sabres can consistently play well or if the games against Boston and Toronto were just part of the win two, lose two routine that has plagued them this season. - Devin (SabresZone Blogger)

Rivet to return to Sabres lineup; Connolly aims at weekend
Buffalo SabresThe Buffalo Sabres' roulette wheel of health has finally landed on 19 and 52. Those who had their chips on 61 are out of luck.

Well-traveled Ellis gets where he wants to go
Buffalo SabresThe last 11 months have been a bit of a whirlwind for winger Matt Ellis: He has been with Detroit, Los Angeles, Buffalo, Portland (AHL), and back with Buffalo again. But a 3-point effort will put a rest to his traveling woes, and bring a sheepish smile to his face.

For much of their 10-game winning streak, the Bruins had made sure to get on top of their opponent early. But it was the visiting Buffalo Sabres playing the role of aggressor in yesterday's game at TD Banknorth Garden. Buffalo drove the middle and cluttered the slot, creating confusion in front of Boston goaltender Tim Thomas.

Some Sabres are skating on thin ice
Buffalo SabresBuffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff is done messing around. He made that abundantly clear in recent weeks while using the oldest and most effective coaching tool in the shed: ice time. For all the chalk talks and video, nothing gets a message across better than a seat on the bench or an evening in the press box.

Ruff laughed Friday at the suggestion that his words have grown stale with a team that has been largely intact since the beginning of last season. He shrugged it off as a product of losing. In fact, he has tried everything. He has pushed and pulled back. He’s gone soft and been tough. And now he’s removing all wiggle room.
